The Port of Los Angeles is on pace to process 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, which would be just the third time the shipping hub has reached that benchmark in the course of a year.

According to data released on November 18, the Port of Los Angeles processed more than 848,000 TEUs in October, marking a 4% decrease from the previous month’s cargo volumes, and a 6.3% year-over-year dip from October 2024. However, the port also reported a 2% year-over-year increase in cargo volumes for the first 10 months of 2025, after processing more than 8.6 million TEUs year-to-date, as of October 31.

“With six weeks to go, we are within reach of the 10 million container unit-mark for the year,” Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka said. “That kind of performance is powered by the skill and dedication of our waterfront workforce along with the terminal operators who keep this port running safely and efficiently every day.”

Seroka also noted that he expects cargo volumes to soften in November and December compared to last year, given that in the closing months of 2024, businesses were rushing to bring in shipments ahead of expected tariffs imposed by the incoming Trump administration. Ahead of the holiday season, retail and manufacturing inventories are “well-stocked,” Seroka added, creating less of a need for a surge in cargo akin to what the port saw late last year.
